With funds from the statewide Early Assessment Program, the EAP program at California State University, Chico has helped local and regional schools lower remediation rates of incoming freshmen in math and English. Nine Schools in CSU, Chico’s service area, which stretches from Yuba County to the Oregon border, are being recognized for their students’ improved achievement on the 2008 STAR test (the standard California achievement test administered to all juniors). In an impressive display of creativity, talent and cooperation, CSU, Chico marketing and graphic design/media arts students put together a marketing strategy to encourage healthy drinking behavior that garnered second place at the district level of a national advertising competition. Full Story

For the first time since the 1990s, students participating in the Model United Nations (MUN) course at California State University, Chico won the two top awards at the national Model United Nations Conference held in New York April 5–9. The Chico delegation, representing the Republic of Korea, was named an Outstanding Delegation from a field of more than 160 colleges and universities. Full Story

Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve (BCCER) still has two hikes scheduled in their series of natural history hikes. An easy hike is scheduled for this Sunday, April 26, and a moderate hike is scheduled for the following Sunday, May 3. Full Story

The California State University, Chico chapter of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society will hold its annual Initiation and Medallion Ceremony on Monday, May 4, 3:30¬–5 p.m. in the Bell Memorial Union Auditorium. New members will be inducted into the society, and the Dorthea Powers Scholarship will be awarded. Full Story

Razzle Dazzle Ballroom: A Red Carpet Affair will be held on Wednesday, May 6, 7–10 p.m. in the Shurmer Gym. Dancers from the community, Butte College and the University are welcome to this event that has been a tradition at California State University, Chico for more than 50 years. Full Story

California State University, Chico will honor the generosity and vision of its founders and the spirit of giving that continues to this day at a special Founders Week event Friday, April 24, at 2 p.m. Full Story

High school students from Chico and surrounding areas are invited to submit landscape and close-up photos of plants for a photo contest with a prize of $100 for first place. The deadline for submissions is May 13. The photos will be on display and judged at an open house to be held in the afternoon on May 15 (time to be announced) in the Chico State Herbarium, Holt Hall 129. Full Story
