Chemistry Summer Research Institute Provides Rare Opportunities for Undergraduates
The Chemistry Summer Research Institute (CSRI) at California State University, Chico offers a unique program of research opportunity, mentoring and financial support. Begun four years ago at the suggestion of organic chemist David Ball (who has included more than 50 students as co-workers in his research during his tenure at CSU, Chico), CSRI brings professors and students together to educate each other in their separate research problems, methods and results. Turner Print Museum Receives Gift of Original Winslow Homer Prints
Robert and Sharon Ross, professors emeriti of the departments of political science and mathematics, respectively, have made a gift of original Winslow Homer prints to the Janet Turner Print Museum at California State University, Chico. The gift includes a collection of wood-engraving illustrations, an original woodblock for his print “Cutting a Figure” and three original etchings, also by Homer. In addition, there is an etching by Renoir, “Sur la plage,” and an etching by Pissarro, “Vachère au bord de l’eau.” Full Story

CSU, Chico Part of Substantial Grant to Support Professional Science Master’s Programs
The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation has awarded the California State University a second major grant, this one of $474,000 to support Professional Science Master’s (PSM) programs. CSU, Chico is one of the 14 CSUs currently offering the program and will receive $26,389, bringing its three-year total to $76, 162. Full Story

Herbarium Collection Contributes to Climate Study
The Herbarium at California State University, Chico, located on the first floor of Holt Hall, is a little-known treasure, a warehouse of approximately 98,000 native plants. Data on native plants from the herbarium was recently part of a study to analyze current distributions of plants native to California and to project distributions into the future. Full Story
