Historic Preservation Conference and Workshop To Be Held at CSU, Chico

History Professor Researches Slave Labor in the Civil War Era in California

California’s reputation as a “free” state during the Civil War era is largely undeserved, said Michael Magliari, a professor of history at California State University, Chico. Magliari is working on a book on the exploitation of Indian workers in the state during the 1850s and 1860s. With the passage of California’s Act for the Government and Protection of Indians, a system of what Magliari calls “unfree labor” was made legally possible, fostering “abuses that shaded over into de facto slavery.” Full Story

Construction Management Professor Will Be Honored at Dedication of Red Bluff Underpass

The underpass segment of Red Bluff’s River Park Trail project will be dedicated to Richard G. Holman, Department of Construction Management, California State University, Chico for his contributions to the project. Red Bluff Trails United (RBTU) will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Red Bluff on Thursday, Aug. 30 at 4 p.m. at the entrance to the trail underpass behind the Chamber of Commerce at River Park. Boot Camp Readies New College Students for Success in Calculus

A different kind of boot camp is in session now in Holt Hall at California State University, Chico. Twenty first-time freshmen in math, science and engineering programs are going through some rigorous training to prepare them for battle with college-level precalculus, calculus, chemistry and physics. Associated Students Child Development Laboratory Receives New Name and National Accreditation

The Child Development Laboratory at California State University, Chico under the Child Development Program has partnered with the on-campus Associated Students Children’s Center for the last three years to provide comprehensive services to university students and families in the community. After meetings between the faculty, the dean of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences, the Associated Students and the Children’s Center director, the program has officially been renamed Associated Students Child Development Laboratory.
