CSU, Chico Awarded $944,415 Grant for Improving Teacher Quality Grant

The Mathematics Project at California State University, Chico has won funding for a new professional development project to improve math instruction in kindergarten through second grade. The California Postsecondary Education Commission (CPEC) awarded a four-year grant of $944,415 to the University in a statewide competition. Full Story

This Way to Sustainability III, the largest sustainability conference of its kind in the United States, will be held in the Bell Memorial Union at California State University, Chico Nov. 1 through Nov. 4. Former “Lost Boy of Sudan” Will Address Human Rights Abuses in South Sudan and Darfur

Deng Chol, executive director of the Lost Boys’ and Lost Girls’ National Nonprofit Organization, will speak on “Human Rights Abuses and Mass Murder by the Khartoum Government in the South of Sudan and in Darfur” on Monday, Nov. 5. The presentation, to be held at 8 p.m. in Holt 170 on the California State University, Chico campus, is free and open to the public. Full Story

Pumpkin DropGet in the Halloween spirit as the Society of Physics Students at California State University, Chico presents the Twentieth Annual Pumpkin Drop at high noon on Wednesday, Oct. 31, on the south side of Butte Hall. Legend has it that Galileo Galilei demonstrated his Law of Falling Bodies by climbing to the top of the Tower of Pisa so that he could drop a large ball and a small ball at the same time. Both balls hit the ground together, and his law was demonstrated. Full Story

Elementary Students Join CSU, Chico Classes for Mathematics

Approximately 160 fourth, fifth and sixth graders from McManus Elementary School will spend the day at California State University, Chico on Friday, Oct. 26, participating in the Mathematics Early Field Experience (MEFE) Day. The day is a celebration of mathematics supported jointly by the University and local elementary partner schools. Full Story

CSU, Chico Students and Faculty Continue the Rebuild New Orleans Project

neworleans.gifStudents and faculty from the College of Engineering, Computer Science and Construction Management at California State University, Chico will travel in January 2008 to New Orleans for the third time. They will continue their efforts to help rebuild New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the devastating hurricane that struck Louisiana in August 2005. The Rebuild New Orleans Project (RNOP) team grew in size from 22 students in 2006 to 55 in 2007. Full Story

Grant Will Improve Science Teacher Retention

marcum.jpgBev Marcum, director of the California Science Project Inland Northern Site, California State University, Chico, has been awarded a four-year grant for $439,000 from the California Postsecondary Commission and the California Science Project for work with the Science Teacher Retention Initiative. This initiative is built on work Marcum has been doing with the Science Project and with grants from NASA’s Opportunities for Visionary Academics Program and CSU, Chico’s Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching for support of interdisciplinary collaboration in the sciences for more than 10 years.
