Students to Get Financial Aid Despite Budget Crisis

Students at California State University, Chico will receive their financial aid disbursements as scheduled beginning Aug. 16, despite there being no state budget. Non-state dollars will be used to cover state financial aid funds until the budget is passed. Full Story

College of Business Hosts Enterprise Management Technology Workshop

Beginning Monday, Aug. 12, the College of Business at California State University, Chico will host a weeklong curriculum workshop on enterprise management technology. The purpose of the workshop is to disseminate the teaching and research materials that have been developed by Chico business faculty to 50 professors from more than 30 universities nationwide. USDA Rural Development Grant Approval Announced

The Center for Economic Development (CED) at California State University, Chico has announced the approval of a USDA Rural Development Rural Business Enterprise Grant (RBEG). The grant will provide funding for specialized technical assistance to small rural businesses located within 11 Northern California counties (Butte, Colusa, Glenn, Lassen, Modoc, Plumas, Shasta, Sutter, Tehama, Trinity and Yuba) through a program titled the Business and Industry Assistance Program (BIAP) for Northern California. The purpose of this assistance is to encourage local economic development and new job creation by improving the capability of new and existing local firms to market their products and services broadly, increasing their potential market access through low cost product, market and operation-oriented technical assistance. The assistance will be specially targeted to businesses that qualify as small businesses according to USDA's RBEG definitions. The project was started on July 1, 2002, and is scheduled to be completed by June 30, 2003. Full Story

Geothermal Power Development Review Describes Benefits to Local Economies

A comprehensive review of the geothermal energy development planned for Northern California has been released by the Center for Economic Development (CED) at California State University, Chico. Titled "The Economic Impact of Calpine's Geothermal Development Projects in Siskiyou County, California," the report quantifies the local and regional economic benefits of two power plant projects proposed for the Glass Mountain Known Geothermal Resource Area, 45 miles south of Klamath Falls, Oregon. Geothermal energy is harnessed by sending dry steam, created when water is heated deep below the earth's surface by exposure to hot porous rock, directly through a steam turbine. Full Story
