4th Annual Campus Sustainability Day Event at CSU, Chico Today, 10:00am-2:00pm

AS Sustainability and the Institute for Sustainability Development are co-hosting the 4th annual Campus Sustainability Day event Oct. 21, 2009 at CSU, Chico on the Trinity Commons Lawn, formerly known as the Free Speech Area. This event is expected to surpass previous events in every aspect, from an increasing number of participants to implementing creative ways to inform faculty and students about sustainable practices taking place on campus.

This event is an opportunity for various campus departments and student organizations to showcase the sustainable practices that have helped to gain recognition for CSU, Chico as a “green campus.” Most participants will feature large visual displays that provide both passive and interactive education and awareness about the importance of sustainability. It will also highlight what the campus is doing to advance sustainability. In addition to the displays, the event will feature music, brief presentations and campus tours.

Here are just a few of the organizations participating this year:

• University Printing Services – Displaying a “Printer Pyramid” of discarded printers, encouraging staff to switch to the multi-function printers to save energy and reduce paper waste.
• User Services – Displaying charts showing energy and dollar savings thanks to Faronics Power Save software installed in all labs across campus.
• AS Dining Services – Showcasing information on local/organic food grown at the University Farm, recycling and composting efforts, and use of California’s only Certified Green food service provider to be sustainable and serve fresh food.
• AS Bookstore – Showcasing eco-friendly products such as organic collegiate apparel, Klean Kanteens, Chico Bags and socks made from recycled plastic bottles.
• AS Recycling – Displaying a visual illustration of the fact that CSU, Chico recycles enough paper annually to save 2,528 trees.
• AS Compost – With a model of the largest human-made structure in Butte County—the Neal Road Landfill—and an illustration of how much bigger it would be if we didn’t compost.
• Environmental Action and Resource Center – Offering a “Veggie Feed” and “Fair Trade Coffee Break” to model a vegetarian diet and highlight the fact that October is Fair Trade Month.
• Butte Environmental Council – Showcasing information on how students and faculty can make their own home and office cleaning products and eliminate toxins.
• Take Back the Tap – Challenging participants to take the “Tap Water Challenge” taste test and pledge to kick the water bottle habit. Also featuring a “Water Walk” in which participants carry 10 gallons of water for a half mile to demonstrate what much of the world goes through to get access to water.
• Green Campus – Promoting their annual “Take the Stairs Day,” enlightening the campus community on the energy usage of elevators and encouraging them to take the stairs instead. They will have a pledge for participants to sign, and will be giving out raffle tickets and snacks.
• Zero Waste Challenge – Showcasing a display on consumption and waste from a campus and community level and encouraging participants to sign up from Oct. 21–Nov. 4 to carry all waste they generate in a bag and strive to reduce waste.

CSU, Chico’s Strategic Priority for Sustainable Development promotes the idea that each generation owes something to those which follow, and that we will create environmentally literate citizens who embrace sustainability as a way of living. This event promises to educate faculty, staff and students about saving our world for the future.
