Students With Disabilities to Play and Compete in Adapted Sports Day

Students with disabilities from Butte, Sutter, Yuba, Glenn, Tehama and Shasta counties will participate in the 7th Annual Adapted Physical Education Sports Day on Friday, Nov. 3, 9:30 am-12:30 pm in Acker and Shurmer gymnasiums at California State University, Chico.

Approximately 100 students with visual, hearing or orthopedic disabilities will compete in the sporting events coordinated by the Adapted Physical Education faculty and majors along with the Northern California Adapted Physical Education Consortium. The adapted physical education teachers and parents for the surrounding counties will bring the students.

Registration begins at 8:45 am in Acker Gymnasium, and opening ceremonies begin at 9:30 am. A closing ceremony concludes the games from 12:30 to 12:45 pm.

Students participate in both individual and team sports from 10 am-12:30 pm in Shurmer and Acker Gyms. Team sports include goal ball, wheelchair soccer, team handball, volleyball, golf and Nerf football. The climbing wall will be open from 10 am until 12:30 pm.

Adapted PE Sports Day has attracted more than 200 people, including participants, their families and teachers each year since it was created seven years ago.

"The day is fun for the participants and their families and for the college students who help run the events," said Rebecca Lytle, professor of kinesiology. "Everyone benefits, especially the adapted PE teachers-in-training, who get valuable experience in putting on such an event."
