Kinesiology Professor Craig Buschner is President-Elect of National Physical Education Organization

Craig Buschner, Ed.D., professor in the Department of Kinesiology at California State University, Chico, was recently elected president-elect of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE), at its national convention in Salt Lake City.

The mission of NASPE, a nonprofit professional education association, is to enhance knowledge, improve professional practice, and increase support for high quality physical education.

As a national spokesperson for NASPE, Professor Buschner will advocate for quality sport, physical activity and physical education programs to tackle obesity in children and health related problems, as well as the importance of physical activity for everyone.

Prior to coming to CSU,Chico in 1989, Bushner was a K-6 physical education teacher in Macomb, IL and a professor at the University of Southern Mississippi. He had completed visiting professorships at the University of Texas and the University of Denver.

Buschner, a member of the California Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (CAHPERD), was a national instructor for the American Master Teacher Program where he presented both pedagogy and content workshops.

His professional service includes numerous presentations at state, district, national and international conferences. He has published articles for over 25 years in the “Journal of Teaching Physical Education,” ” Quest,” “Journal of Classroom Interaction, “Contemporary Education,” and the “Journal of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance “(JOPERD), among others. He has served on the editorial boards of JOPERD and “The Physical Educato” and is often a guest reviewer for “Strategies, Journal of Teaching Physical Education,” and “Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport.” He wrote the book, “Teaching Children Movement Concepts and Skills: Becoming a Master Teacher.”

He received his BS from Virginia Commonwealth University, his MS from Western Illinois University and his Ed.D. from Oklahoma State University.

NASPE is a recognized leader in sport and physical activity. The non-profit professional membership association sets the standard for practice in physical education and sport. NASPE’s 17,000 members include K-12 physical education teachers, coaches, athletic directors, athletic trainers, sport management professionals, researchers, and college and university faculty who prepare physical education teachers.
