Interim Dean of College of Behavioral and Social Sciences Named

Robert Jackson has been named interim dean of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences at California State University, Chico for the fall 2006 semester. His first day in the position is Aug. 1.

Jackson replaces Byron Jackson, who retired this spring and served as interim dean of the college from 2004-06. A search is ongoing for a permanent dean for the college.

From 1997 to 2004, Jackson served as dean of the School of Graduate, International and Sponsored Programs and vice provost for research. He has been a professor in the Department of Political Science at CSU, Chico since 1970.

"Bob has a long and distinguished academic and administrative career at our University. We are fortunate that he has agreed to step in and help us this coming year," said Scott McNall, provost and vice president for academic affairs. "I know his experience and expertise will again be of great value to the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences and the University."

"It is a real honor to be able to serve BSS after being a member of the faculty for 36 years," said Jackson. "I look forward to working with the faculty, staff and students in the months ahead."

Before becoming dean of the graduate school, Jackson was director of the CSU, Chico Center for International Studies from 1986-97. He is an expert on globalization and continues to teach international relations classes for the political science department. Jackson was president and a charter board member of the Consortium of Central and North American Universities from 1990-1996. He was an advisory board member of the University Study Abroad Consortium from 1997-2001.

Jackson annually edits a book of readings entitled "Global Issues" published by Dushkin/McGraw Hill. He has been instrumental in obtaining federal contracts to bring hundreds of foreign professionals to Chico for intensive training. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Oregon.
