Dean of Undergraduate Education Named
William Loker has been named dean of undergraduate education at California State University, Chico. He served as interim dean during the 2005-06 academic year. His appointment begins July 1.
Loker has been a professor in the CSU, Chico Department of Anthropology since 1996 and served as chair in 2003-04. During the 2004-05 academic year, he was interim associate dean for the School of Graduate, International and Interdisciplinary Studies.
"Bill has done a fine job overseeing general education, honors and other programs, and I am very pleased he will continue in this position," said Scott McNall, provost and vice president for academic affairs.
"It is an honor and a privilege to serve the University," said Loker. "I look forward to working with a broad array of people across campus — faculty, student services professionals, students and my administrative colleagues — as we work to enhance our students' intellectual growth, sense of civic engagement and social and psychological well-being. Chico is already known nationally for its commitment to student success and I intend to work to enhance our national reputation in this area."
Prior to coming to CSU, Chico, Loker taught at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and Mississippi State University. He received his master's degree and Ph.D. from the University of Colorado and did his undergraduate work at Rutgers University.
Loker has done extensive field work in Honduras and has published numerous articles on environment and development and natural resource management in Central and Latin America. Among his awards are a Fulbright Award in 1998 to study land use in Honduras and two Rockefeller Foundation grants in 1989 to study sustainable agriculture.
