Model United Nations Team Brings Home Honors

The California State University, Chico Model United Nations (MUN) team earned top awards at the National Model United Nations competition held in New York in April. The team has consistently performed well at the competition, and this year was no exception. The CSU, Chico team brought home two awards, which put them in the top 5 percent of competitors.

The Chico team, which represented the country of Australia, earned the "Outstanding Position Paper" award. The position paper involves most of the team in research and preparation in the semester leading up to the competition. The team also received an "Honorable Mention" for their performance.

Twenty-one CSU, Chico students joined more than 3,500 other student delegates from 300 schools and six continents. The preparation for the demanding competition is part of the political science course, International Organizations, taught by Professor Rick Ostrom.

MUN is an organization that practices simulation of the United Nations. Participating on the MUN team provides students the opportunity to develop skills in research, writing, public speaking and diplomacy.

"In addition to the professional skills we developed," said team member Jen Redding, "we learned socializing and time-management skills. Each of us also made some very good and lasting friendships."

MUN provides an opportunity to develop international understanding and to meet students from other universities. Students interested in international relations and/or the International Relations major are encouraged to explore the MUN program. Students from all majors are also welcome if they are interested in expanding their knowledge of international relations, foreign policy and good governance.

For more information on the International Organizations class or the program, please contact the Department of Political Science in Butte 741 or Professor Ostrom at 898-5301.
