Vice President for Student Affairs Named

Drew Calandrella, vice president for student affairs at Rowan University in New Jersey, has accepted the position of vice president for student affairs at California State University, Chico.

Calandrella will begin his new post at CSU, Chico Aug. 1. He replaces Jim Moon, who has been vice president for student affairs, and before that interim VP, since 2003.

Calandrella has been vice president at Rowan since 2000. Among his accomplishments as vice president are developing a freshman year experience program, implementing a campus master plan for dining services, restructuring the Greek Life program and enhancing campus wide enrollment management and retention services.

Prior to his service at Rowan, Calandrella was vice president for enrollment and student academic services for Sonoma State University from 1998 to 2000. He also held prior administrative posts at Sonoma from 1986 to 1998, including associate vice president for student academic services, acting director of computing, media and telecommunications services, director of financial aid, associate dean of student affairs and director of the Career Development Center.

Calandrella began his professional career as a counselor and psychology instructor, then moved into career development and services at Temple University and North Adams State College. He has a B.A. in psychology and M.Ed. in student personnel and guidance from the College of New Jersey (formerly Trenton State College). He completed doctoral coursework at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1989.

“Drew Calandrella will be an outstanding colleague and strong leader for the division, the University, and the community,” said President Paul Zingg. “He will enable us to move forward on the areas that we most emphasize — developing a greater sense of University and community citizenship among our students; supporting strong, cooperative relationships between Student Affairs and Academic Affairs, especially regarding student development and learning; engaging students in shaping and telling the good ‘story’ of the University; continuing our agenda of a more inclusive, respectful student life experience; and appreciating the student experience as a continuum from initial outreach and recruitment to commencement and loyal alumni status.”

“I am honored to be serving as the next vice president for student affairs at CSU, Chico and excited about the opportunity to work with the excellent staff in the division of Student Affairs, the students, the faculty, administration and the city of Chico to realize President Zingg’s vision for the campus,” said Calandrella. “The opportunity to shape and develop an excellent student-centered organization committed to helping Chico students transition into, through, and out of the University with a college degree in hand is an opportunity I could not pass up and will enjoy immensely. I am looking forward to joining the campus and Chico community in August.”

Zingg also praised Moon, who is retiring after 35 years on campus. “Jim leads with the force of his personal example, and is widely respected for his kindness, civility, resolve, integrity and fairness,” Zingg said. “His leadership has set the tone for stronger teamwork between Academic Affairs and Student Affairs on our bottom line — student learning and success. Both on and off campus, he has helped build greater confidence in and support for our efforts to orient our expectations of student conduct around values and responsibility. He is an effective leader, a good colleague, and a trusted friend.”

Zingg also thanked management Professor Jim Morgan, who chaired the search committee, and other committee members and campus community members who provided input into the search process.

The CSU, Chico Student Affairs division includes the offices of Career Planning and Placement, Disability Support Services, the Educational Opportunity Program, Financial Aid and Scholarship, Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreational Sports, Psychological Counseling, Wellness Center and Testing, Student Activities, Student Health Service, Student Judicial Affairs and University Housing and Food Service.
