Construction Management Honors Students Present Paper at International Conference

Students Erin Loftin and Kelly Coogan, honors students from the Department of Construction Management, California State University, Chico, presented a paper titled "Are Building Information Models Effective for Teaching Productivity Analysis?" at the 42nd Annual Associated Schools of Construction's (ASC) International Conference held at Colorado State University, Ft. Collins, Colo., in April.

The two students assisted lead author and faculty member Denny Gier in a research study on the effectiveness of using 3D models of a construction project that are linked to a database containing information on the project such as quantity of material, cost, schedules and specifications.

Loftin and Coogan traveled to Colorado to present the refereed paper with Professor Gier. "I'm very grateful to have had these two students on my study team," said Gier. "This was a unique opportunity for Erin and Kelly. They did a great job representing CSU, Chico's construction management department at the conference." "

The ASC Conference is a great venue for faculty to share the success of their research efforts and teaching experience and an exceptional learning experience for students. It is also a great opportunity for our department to showcase its leading-edge research work," said Mike Borzage, chair of the Department of Construction Management. "

Our faculty and students excel at applications-oriented research," said Ken Derucher, dean of the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Construction Management. "As a college, we make efforts to bring undergraduate students into our research. I'm proud of the work that Erin and Kelly performed and their contribution to the research program."

ASC is a professional association of universities and construction education programs, with the mission of developing and advancing construction education. More than 160 faculty from 30 US, British and Australian Universities met to present refereed papers on their research work at the ASC conference.

This is the first time that undergraduate students participated in presenting such a paper. The paper will be published in the proceedings of the 42nd ASC International Conference.
