Dean of the School of Graduate, International and Interdisciplinary Studies Named
Susan Place has been named dean of the School of Graduate, International and Interdisciplinary Studies at California State University, Chico. She has been interim dean since 2004.
"Susan brings a depth of experience and knowledge to the position, as well passion, commitment and energy to the programs for which she is responsible," said Scott McNall, provost and vice president for academic affairs. "We are fortunate to have her in the position."
"Susan is the right person for the job and we look forward to her guidance in the further development and expansion of graduate education on this campus," said President Paul Zingg. "Please join us in congratulating her."
Place is a professor of geography and former chair of the Department of Geography and Planning. She has held a number of other administrative positions on campus, including coordinator of Latin American Studies, director of International Programs and, most recently, director of the Multicultural and Gender Studies Program.
"I'm delighted to have this opportunity," said Place. "My priority for the school is to help other units and students achieve their goals. I look forward to continuing to create collaborative relationships across the campus to promote high quality master's programs, internationalization of the University and innovative programs that link students, faculty and staff across disciplinary boundaries."
Place received her PhD in geography from UCLA and began her academic career at Ranford University in Virginia. She also served as an assistant professor of geography at the University of New Mexico until she came to CSU, Chico in 1988.
An expert on ecotourism and international environmental issues, Place recently co-authored a chapter on environment, population, and urbanization in the book Understanding Contemporary Latin America with geography professor Jacquelyn Chase. Among her awards is a Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad Fellowship for research on Tortuguero National Park, Costa Rica.
