Ethics Forum Examines Athletes as Role Models
Should high profile athletes be considered society's role models? This question will be discussed by two former pro-football players and responded to by President Paul J. Zingg, sports historian, at a CAPE forum on Tuesday, April 18, 7:30 pm, PAC 144, at California State University, Chico.
CAPE (Center for Applied and Professional Ethics) is co-sponsoring the forum with the College of Business. It is one of the many events during Founders Week, April 15-23.
Some of the other questions they will be discussing include: Do famous athletes have duties only to their respective teams and teammates, or are they also responsible for being good role models for their fans? If they should be good role models, what are the constraints of conduct by which they should abide, on and off the playing field? On what grounds?
David Casper, former tight end for the Oakland Raiders, and Jeff Nedved, former wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers, will be the featured speakers. They will discuss their views based on their first-hand experience.
Jeff Nedved was raised in Chico and San Jose and now works for BeneTrac in Chico. He played receiver and punt-returner for the 49ers in 1989 and 1990, playing with the team that became Super Bowl Champions, beating the Denver Broncos 55-10. After 10 knee surgeries, he was forced to give up his football career. He lives in Chico with his wife and family
David Casper played for Notre Dame as an undergraduate and was picked by the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders in 1974, where he was a tight end and an acclaimed contributor to a Super Bowl win in 1977. During his career, he was named All-Pro and All-AFC four times, was selected to play in five Pro Bowls, and was picked as the tight end for the "Sports Illustrated" All-Time Dream Team and the All-Century Team. He was selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2002.
Casper is a financial representative and a managing director of the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network office in Walnut Creek and Santa Rosa, California.
Andy Flescher, director for CAPE, will be moderating. For other Founders Week events, visit www.csuchico.edu/pa/foundersweek.
