Professor of Therapeutic Recreation Invited to International Paralympics
Laura McLachlin, a professor of therapeutic recreation in the Department of Recreation and Parks Management, California State University, Chico, has been invited to the International Paralympics in Torino, Italy. McLachlin will be a distinguished guest of the International Paralympic Committee (IPA) during the games scheduled for March 10-19.
McLachlin teaches recreation for special populations to future teachers, advises master's/honor thesis projects, directs interns and provides academic advice to students. She has published numerous articles in professional journals and chapters in recreation anthologies in the area of special populations, recreation and leisure.
In fall 2005, McLachlin received the Exemplary Program Award, on behalf of the California Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and the State Council on Adapted Physical Education for her involvement in the Ability First Sports Camp at CSU, Chico.
The first Paralympic Winter Games were held in 1998 to allow persons with disabilities to compete at an Olympic Game level. McLachlin will leave March 9 and return March 23. She will be consulting with the IPA on a variety of research issues.
