Renowned Psychologist To Lecture on Adult Relationships and Social Behaviors

California State University, Chico's Department of Psychology will host internationally known scholar Phillip Shaver, department chair and distinguished professor of psychology at UC Davis, for a lecture Thursday, March 9, 5:30-6:45 p.m., in Ayres 106.

Shaver is regarded as one of the foremost experts in the world on the association between adult attachment style and other psychological constructs such as self-esteem, personality traits, death anxiety and compassion and altruism. Attachment theory, growing out of the study of emotional bonds between parents and children, is an important area of research in adult relationships.

Shaver's lecture is titled "Adult Attachment and its Relationship to Social Behaviors: Altruism, Compassion, Care-giving and Sexual Behavior." The lecture is free and open to the public.

Shaver has extensively studied the application of attachment theory to research on relationship loss and adult romantic love. Currently, he is extending this work to study the attachment-style differences in people's defenses or coping strategies, and couples' communication.

Shaver has taught at UC Davis since 1992 and been chair of the Department of Psychology since 2001. He was awarded the Distinguished Professorship at UC Davis in 2004. He has received numerous other honors and awards in his field and published more than 200 articles and books. He received his PhD in social psychology from the University of Michigan in 1970.
