Competitors for President's Scholarships Receive Good News

Two hundred thirty high school seniors, already admitted to California State University, Chico, for fall 2006, visited campus on Saturday, Feb. 25, to compete for ten $12,000 scholarships and ten $1,000 scholarships. President Paul Zingg made a surprise announcement of $1,000 scholarships for all who competed in the competition. No matter where they place on the three tests, each student will receive the $1,000 incentive to attend CSU, Chico.

"This is an extra commitment to your success," President Zingg said. "We want you here. We are confident you will succeed here, and your success will further our own."

The competitors, who were invited to the competition as a result of having a grade point average of 3.75 or above, took two tests in the morning and one in the afternoon, while their parents and friends toured the campus. Students and parents also had the opportunity to listen to an Honor's Program presentation and to go on a tour of housing on campus. At a reception in the afternoon, students talked with college deans and department chairs.

"Presidents Scholars Day is an important day to reveal for our visitors what makes the Chico experience a distinctive and compelling one," said Zingg. "It is as important to convey the spirit of our university-a generous, caring community focused on student learning and success-as it is to provide information about programs and policies. The day allows us to tell potential enrollees how much we appreciate what they have achieved so far in their high school careers and how much we want them to continue to achieve in our company."

The one-time $1,000 awards were made possible by donors to the President's Scholars and Awards program, including a gift from the estate of Carol M. Scott ('35) and by the University Foundation's commitment to make this award possible. For more information about the Presidents Scholars Program, call Carol Berg at 530-898-5201.
