Engineering Students To Help Rebuild Schools in New Orleans

Twenty-three students from the College of Engineering, Computer Science and Construction Management are traveling to New Orleans and partnering with Tulane University to participate in the Paint Rally for Public Schools. The Paint Rally is a volunteer project to clean and renovate damaged public schools.

The California State University, Chico students' primary goal is to assist the community of New Orleans in reestablishing a rich learning environment for the school children.

The trip is planned as an alternative spring break. The group will leave Chico on March 11 and return March 18. They will be housed at the John Calvin Presbyterian Church Volunteer Shelter. Each day they will commute to and from their worksite in the Uptown district of New Orleans.

The total projected cost of the project will be about $18,000 to cover transportation, food, supplies and materials. Students have paid for a major portion of this upfront with the cost of their airline tickets. There are several fundraising activities planned to cover the remaining costs.

A Bowl-A-Thon held Feb. 9 raised over $1,000; a Car Smash event held yesterday, Feb. 23, followed by a Spaghetti Dinner and silent auction, added to the funds.

The next fundraising event is a BBQ hamburger lunch for $5, with a professor pie-in-the-face event, which will be held March 2, 11:30-1:30 pm at the Langdon/O'Connell Quad. The tickets are only $5, and everyone is invited.

The CSU, Chico team is also pursuing business and corporate sponsorships.

They have plans for a post-benefit concert when they return.

If you have any questions about the project or the fundraising events, please call Terry Battle at 530-898-4898.
