Up 'til Dawn Surpasses Quarter Million Mark for St Jude's
St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital has notified the organizers of the Up 'til Dawn fundraising event held last Nov. 7 at California State University, Chico, that their efforts have yielded more than $101,000 to date, which places them in the number one position nationwide for fundraising.
This year's total puts the CSU, Chico group over the $250,000 mark for total contributions over the five years of the project. The organizers had set reaching that mark as one of three goals for this year. They easily surpassed that goal, and they are now at more than $300,000 total.
The second goal they set was to raise more than $100,000 this year, which they have done. The third goal is to be named the top college in the nation for St. Jude's Up 'til Dawn fundraising efforts. They know that they are in the top three, but must wait until all donations have come in and been tallied before they will know where they will finish.
Donations will continue to come in throughout the spring. There will be other fundraising events, including the sale of $100,000 Grand candy bars to celebrate this year's success.
During the November event, more than 850 participants produced over 18,000 letters to friends and family requesting donations for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. During the week of the fundraiser, CSU, Chico was named "Star of the Week" by St. Jude's for its remarkable efforts on behalf of the hospital and the children and families it serves.
"We are excited about how well we've done so far this year. The students worked extremely hard and pulled off an amazing event, so I'm not surprised," said Larry Bassow, Greek Life program coordinator and staff advisor to the Up 'til Dawn event. "Chico students are special for their enthusiasm and willingness to get involved."
Although St. Jude Hospital is located in Memphis, Tenn., doctors and hospitals use its work throughout the world. The hospital, founded by late entertainer Danny Thomas, is committed to treating all children, no matter what their economic situation.
