Middle East Scholar To Give Talk on Politics in Egypt

The future of the Mubarek government and the impact of political reform and Islam on Egypt will be the topic of an address by Khairi Abaza, visiting fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, on Wednesday, March 1, at 7:30 pm in Performing Arts Center 134 on the California State University, Chico campus.

The address, titled "Political Islam and Regime Survival in Egypt," is free and open to the public. It is presented by CSU, Chico's Department of Religious Studies and the Middle Eastern Studies Program.

In Egypt, 2005 culminated in presidential and parliamentary elections that might mark a turning point in the country's history. Abaza's talk will address the long-term implications of these events for Egyptian President Hosni Mubarek's government, and whether they will provide impetus toward constitutional reform.

Abaza's focus at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy is Egyptian politics and democratic reform. Previously, he served as Cultural Committee secretary and a Foreign Affairs Committee member of the Egyptian liberal Wafd Party. Abaza was born in Rabat, Morocco, and raised in Cairo. He holds a master's degree in Near and Middle Eastern studies from the University of London, where he is currently a PhD candidate in politics.
