Student Documentary on Northern Ireland To Be Previewed Wednesday
"When Hope and History Rhymed," a feature-length film on the peace process in Northern Ireland, filmed by a team of California State University, Chico students last summer, is being previewed on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 5 pm in Ayres 106.
Under the auspices of the Peace Institute at CSU, Chico, 15 students traveled to Belfast, Ireland, last summer to investigate prospects for peace. They were there in July when the Irish Republican Army announced that their armed campaign was over.
The Chico students interviewed and filmed people on the street and principal actors in the conflict between Catholic separatists and Protestant loyalists to Britain. CSU, Chico alumnus Kelly Candaele, a prominent journalist, filmmaker, and expert on Northern Ireland, supervised the documentary.
"Northern Ireland has been plagued by seemingly intractable violence for centuries," said Ron Hirschbein, director of the Peace Institute, who accompanied the students to Ireland. "However, during the past decade, remarkable progress occurred in resolving the conflict. The students interviewed former senator George Mitchell, Prime Minister Albert Reynolds, and Nobel Laureate John Hume, among others. They also interviewed ordinary folk in Protestant and Catholic neighborhoods."
The audience is invited to join the filmmakers after the preview at Woodstock's Pizza.
