Housing Honors Residents for Scholastic Achievement
University Housing and Food Services, California State University, Chico, is honoring first-time students for their high grade point averages during their first semester on campus, fall 2005. A scholastic dinner will be held on February 28. Kenneth Brooks, a resident advisor with an outstanding GPA for fall semester, will deliver the keynote address.
The scholastic dinner is held annually to recognize and encourage the achievements of freshmen their first semester on campus. The tradition is more than 30 years old. President Paul Zingg, his cabinet, the First-Year Experience task force and advisors to thematic houses in Konkow and Whitney are invited to attend the dinner.
Ten resident students with 4.0 GPAs during the fall semester will receive a plaque. Students with a 3.5 and above GPA for fall 2005 will receive a certificate of recognition. This year there are 211 students who will be recognized.
Twelve resident advisors (RAs) with GPAs of 3.5 and above will also be recognized. Their achievement is noteworthy, as they must combine their studies with their responsibilities as RAs.
Keynote speaker Brooks is a senior in computer information systems with a minor in business. He said he set a goal get perfect grades for the fall 2005 semester and is pleased he accomplished it. He did it by careful planning, setting aside time for homework, group projects and, of course, his work as an RA. "I'm going to share with the students my experiences with setting my goals high and balancing my job with my school work. I'll tell them that the hard work paid off," he said. He has an internship with Chevron in San Ramon this summer.
"The rigor of university-level study is oftentimes daunting, especially given the many potential distractions and obligations college students must reconcile," said David Stephen, director of University Housing and Food Services. "The annual University Housing Scholastic Dinner is an occasion to recognize academic achievement at the highest levels and encourage residence hall students in their demonstrated desire to excel academically."
Although not honored at the dinner, 447 additional students who received 3.0-3.49 will receive a letter of recognition from the director and associate director of housing.
There are approximately 1,286 students living in on-campus residence halls at CSU, Chico. An additional 615 live in University Village apartments on Nord Avenue.
