Agricultural Dean Receives Farm Bureau Honor

A. Charles Crabb, dean of the College of Agriculture, California State University, Chico, received the California Farm Bureau Federation Distinguished Service Award in December 2005.

The Distinguished Service Award is the highest honor bestowed by the California Farm Bureau. It was presented to Crabb, dean of the college since 1999, for his role as an ambassador for agriculture to non-agriculture students, for his excellent teaching and for his community involvement.

Crabb began his teaching career in 1978 at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, as an assistant professor in crop science. Later, as associate dean of agriculture at Cal Poly, his administrative duties included managing the university's 10,000-acre farm. Prior to his appointment at CSU, Chico, he served as director of the South Central Region for the University of California Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Crabb was also honored by the National Future Farmers of America Organization in fall of 2005 with the Honorary American FFA Degree. This degree was "in recognition of outstanding contributions made to youth through agricultural education and FFA."

Crabb is past president of the American Association of Schools and Colleges of Agriculture and Renewable Resources. He is also a member of the California State Board of Food and Agriculture, appointed by then Governor Gray Davis, in October 2003, for a four-year term.

The California Farm Bureau Federation works to protect family farms and ranches on behalf of more than 88,000 members statewide.
