Civil Engineering Students Win Structures Competition
California State University, Chico civil engineering students took top honors in this year’s Structural Engineers Association of Central California’s (SEAOCC) structures competition. CSU, Chico hosted the event on Sat., Nov. 5, for performance testing of their structures.
The contest requires civil engineering student teams to design and construct steel structures to meet stringent contest rules. Structures are evaluated on structural efficiency (load capacity divided by structure weight), prediction of failure load and failure mechanism.
The student teams were required to write a design report and to give a presentation at a professional meeting of SEAOCC in Sacramento on Tuesday, Nov. 8, following the competition.
Judging was based on the design report, the actual structure performance and the formal presentation. CSU, Chico earned first place and a check for $1,000. UC Davis placed second. CSU, Chico also won the competition in 2004.
The CSU, Chico students involved in this year’s competition are SEAOCC Student Chapter president Matt King, Jeff Rabo, Aaron Chamberlin, Tanner Michelli, Chin Leung, Ian Hoff, Jasper Rice-Herdt and Guy Hopes. Faculty advisors to the group are professors Jon Mohle and Joel Arthur, Department of Civil Engineering.
