California State University, Chico Continuing Education, in partnership with Butte County Family Court Services, Superior Court of California, presents Children in Trauma 2006: Frontiers in Trauma Treatment, a two-day professional development conference, January 13-14 at the Bell Memorial Union Auditorium on the CSU, Chico campus.

Children in Trauma 2006 will provide a forum for participants to explore the multifaceted issues surrounding children who experience trauma in their lives. The conference will feature internationally recognized author and educator Bessel van der Kolk, MD, professor of psychiatry at Boston University Medical School, and medical director of the Trauma Center at HRI Hospital in Brookline, Mass.

Bessel van der Kolk authored “Psychological Trauma” in 1987, the first integrative text on the subject, encompassing the far ranging impact of trauma on the entire person. He will present and direct discussions surrounding the recent advances in the field of trauma, including the neurobiology of childhood trauma, how children process information and adapt, and how professionals can develop appropriate treatment plans based on the emerging science.

Psychologists, marriage and family therapists, social workers, educators, school counselors, attorneys, law enforcement professionals, mediators, child custody evaluators, behavioral health professionals, nurses, physicians, emergency responders, children’s advocates and concerned individuals are encouraged to take advantage of this continuing education opportunity.

Participants may earn 14 hours of BBSE (Provider PCE 799), BRN (Provider 00656), MCEP (Provider CAL123), and MCLE continuing education.

In addition to the featured sessions, exhibitors from public service agencies and other resource providers will be on hand to share a wide array of information and discuss their services. Exhibitor space is available.
