Upward Bound Scholarship Supporters Recognized

The supporters of a scholarship for high school seniors in the Upward Bound program will be honored Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Albert E. Warrens Reception Center at California State University, Chico.

Unveiling of the Amy Kee Outstanding Senior Award Wall of Recognition will take place at 10 am, with a reception to follow.

Amy Kee was a CSU, Chico senior and social work major when she passed away in 2001. The Modesto native had worked on campus as a resident advisor in the residence halls and as a tutor advisor for Upward Bound.

A scholarship was established in Amy Kee’s name in 2001. Each spring Upward Bound awards three $250 college scholarships to high school seniors participating in the Upward Bound program at CSU, Chico.

Wells Fargo, Craig Hall and Amy Kee’s mother, Brenda McCalip, are among the donors to the $10,000 endowment supporting the award.

“The Amy Kee Award is symbolic of what Upward Bound is all about, which is striving for excellence in everything you do,” said David Ferguson, director, Upward Bound projects. “Corporate and personal contributors recognize how many barriers Upward Bounders must overcome to achieve their goals.”

At Saturday’s event Ferguson will talk about history of the award and read letters from people who knew Kee. Past recipients of the award, donors and Amy Kee’s family are among those planning to attend.

Founded in 1966, CSU, Chico’s Upward Bound program is one of the oldest in the country and has aided thousands of low-income students to become the first in their families to go to college. During the summer, it provides low-income high school students an opportunity to live in dormitories for six weeks and take challenging courses to prepare for college admission. During the academic year, participants can take advantage of college prep workshops on the weekends, tutoring, academic advising, college tours and financial aid workshops for parents and students. CSU, Chico also offers specialized Upward Bound programs: Upward Bound for English as a Second Language (ESL) Learners and Upward Bound Math/Science.
