Charitable and Educational Events Continue in Response to Hurricane Katrina; Fund-Raising Across Campus Tops $20,000

On Monday, Oct. 10, Community Action Volunteers in Education (CAVE) is sponsoring a candlelight walk, a program and an informational fair to recognize hurricane victims and volunteers. This is the latest in numerous efforts by California State University, Chico, in conjunction with community partners, to assist people left in need in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and Rita.

The candlelight walk starts at 6 p.m. at the Children’s Playground on 1st Street in Chico. Participants will walk from the playground to the Trinity United Methodist Church at 5th and Flume Streets for a program and information fair from 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m.

Speakers include a representative of the Adventure Outings team from CSU, Chico that assisted in a Red Cross shelter; John Maretti from the Chico Fire Department, who worked with a Gulf Coast animal rescue effort; and Chris Winger from Trinity United Methodist Church, who assisted in the reconstruction relief mission.

At the fair following the program, organizations will share information about ongoing hurricane relief activities and fund-raisers. Organizations wishing to participate may call Frenchell Hampton in the CAVE office at 898-5817.

A number of fund-raising efforts across campus have raised money to aid hurricane victims.

* Members of Phi Delta Theta and Sigma Nu fraternities and Alpha Phi sorority initiated a fund-raising drive that netted approximately $20,000. The Associated Students, CAVE, the Residence Hall Association and other groups also made significant contributions to the fund. Greek members and other students staffed tables on campus and gave presentations to reach their goal, which culminated in several student leaders, as well as President Paul Zingg, cutting their hair Sept. 28 as part of the bargain.
* About $800 was raised at a concert Sept. 30 at CSU, Chico featuring Sublime Remembered and several regional and local bands. CSU, Chico’s student-run Wild Oak Records, a division of the University’s music industry program, MEISA (Music and Entertainment Industry Student Association), KCSC and AS Presents teamed up to host the benefit.
* Students who live in CSU, Chico’s residence halls contributed $705 by dropping donations in containers at the front desks and in the dining areas of the halls.
* CSU, Chico’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee put up a donation table at soccer and volleyball matches and collected $425.
* Donation boxes by the registers in the AS Bookstore raised $250 for the American Red Cross. Fund-raising will continue at least through October.

An art exhibit to continue public awareness and response to social inequities revealed by Hurricane Katrina is scheduled for this winter in the rotunda of Kendall Hall. The exhibit is being organized by Multicultural and Gender Studies’ Conversations on Diversity, the Women’s Center and Building Bridges. Conversations on Diversity focused on the aftermath of the hurricane in its discussions this fall.

Students, staff, faculty and community members are invited to submit entries of paintings, drawings, poetry, journal fragments, photographs, video and “found art” from the disaster or survivor locations. Contributors do not have to be professional artists to participate.

Entries can be submitted to the Department of Political Science, Butte Hall 741, between Jan. 23 and Feb. 6, 2006. An opening reception will be held Feb. 13 at 5 p.m. in Kendall Hall Rotunda. For more information, contact Professor Lori Beth Way, 530-898-5737.
