North State Principals To Meet on High School Math, English Assessment Program

California State University, Chico is hosting a breakfast meeting of principals and superintendents in the North State Oct. 18 to discuss a CSU program designed to help prepare high-school students for college.

The Early Assessment Program (EAP) tests high school juniors in the spring who choose to see how well they are prepared to enter college. It is a statewide cooperative effort by the CSU, the State Board of Education and the state Department of Education.

The Tuesday, Oct. 18, meeting will run from 7:30 to 9:45 am. It will be held at Canyon Oaks Country Club, 999 Yosemite Dr., in Chico.

All public high school principals and superintendents from CSU, Chico’s 12-country service area have been invited.

CSU, Chico President Paul Zingg will welcome and provide opening remarks starting at 8:15 am, followed by presentations by Joy Salvetti Wolfe, education programs consultant, state Department of Education, Intersegmental Relations; Allison Jones, assistant vice chancellor for student academic support, CSU Chancellor’s Office; and Nancy Brynelson, co-director, Center for the Advancement of Reading, CSU Chancellor’s Office. The meeting will conclude with a discussion and question-and-answer session about EAP.

EAP was created to help bridge the gap between high school preparation and college expectations for English and math and help lower the need for remedial classes after high school.

In spring 2005, the second year EAP test was administered, approximately 186,000 students volunteered to take the EAP English test, and approximately 120,000 volunteered for the math test. The number of student test-takers increased by 21 percent in English, and 3 percent in math, over the prior year.

Students who score well on the EAP tests will be granted exemptions from CSU placement tests for math and English. Students not yet ready for college-level work will be encouraged to take classes in the 12th grade to strengthen skills.

For more information on the Oct. 18 meeting, contact the CSU, Chico Center for Mathematics and Science Education, 530-898-4322. More information on the EAP program is available on Web site.
