Windows to their World Campaign
An upgraded and safer outside play area is the most recent renovation to the Child Development Laboratory (formerly known as the CDL) as part of the Windows to their World Campaign (WW), begun in 1998.
The WW campaign began with the need to replace the 34-year-old sound system in the observation room for Modoc 127. Child Development majors complete their practicum and internship classes in Modoc 127, relying on the room to watch children unobserved.
The sound system was upgraded and a video system added between 2002 and 2003. Since that time, the Child Development Laboratory and the Associated Students Children’s Center have merged. The funds raised by Windows to their World were used exclusively on Modoc 127 and the Modoc playground, fulfilling the original purpose of the campaign.
Due to the merger, future contributions will be shared among four classrooms for phase III of the upgrades, which includes the expansion of the outside play areas. Although there is approximately $16,000 remaining in the WW campaign account, the campaign will continue to raise the necessary $34,000 total for a new “trike” trail, yard expansion and playground toys and equipment.
The sound system was upgraded with underwriting from the University and the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences’s technology and equipment committees. The video equipment was added with approximately $18,000 from the WW campaign. Upgrading the overall site to assure compliance with ADA and federal playground guidelines was also part of this phase. This summer, Facility Management Services completed the drainage system and replaced all of the sand in the Modoc outdoor play area.
“The Child Development Program is grateful to its donors,” said Judy Bordin, coordinator of the Child Development Program at California State University, Chico. “We will continue to renovate the indoor and outdoor play areas in order to provide the richest, most current, highest quality child care program to play, study and learn.”
