Students Raise Funds for Hurricane Relief Effort

Several student organizations at California State University, Chico have joined together to form the Chico State Hurricane Relief Coalition to raise money for the American Red Cross. Originally comprised of Phi Delta Theta, Sigma Nu and Alpha Phi organizations, the coalition has grown to include many other student organizations such as the Associated Students, Residence Hall Association (RHA), Community Action Volunteers in Education (CAVE) and the National Society for Black Engineers (NSBE).

The coalition was able to get all five of the male student government officers of the Associated Students at Chico State to agree to shave their heads if the coalition was able to raise $15,000 through the relief fundraiser. The officers agreed that one officer would shave his head per $3,000 increment. Chico State President Paul Zingg agreed to shave his head, as well, if the students could raise $20,000.

In six days of soliciting students on campus, the organizations have raised more than $9,000, averaging more than $1,000 a day. Three of the officers are already scheduled to have their heads shaved on Thursday, Sept. 29.

The coalition will also be accepting check donations at P.O. BOX 3154 Chico, CA 95928. All checks should be made payable to American Red Cross. General donations can also be made to the American Red Cross office in Chico at 633 Orange St. #3 Chico, CA 95928.

Other Greek organizations in the coalition are Sigma Pi, Gamma Zeta Alpha, Epsilon Sigma Rho, Alpha Gamma Delta, Gamma Phi Beta and Alpha Delta Pi. The coalition will be collecting donations on campus and will be going to local businesses through Sunday, Sept. 25.
