Five a Day-Power Play! Campaign Added to Growing List of CSU, Chico Nutrition Programs

Cindy Wolff, professor of Nutrition and Food Sciences at California State University, Chico and director of both the Sierra Cascade Nutrition and Activity Consortium and the OPT for Fit Kids program, has been awarded a $418,750 grant to implement the California children’s 5 a Day–Power Play! Campaign. The campaign will cover the 12-county Sierra Cascade Region over the next three years.

The 5 a Day–Power Play! Campaign is a statewide social marketing campaign that promotes fruit and vegetable consumption and physical activity among nine- to 11-year-old children through school classrooms and cafeterias; community youth organizations, including after-school and summer programs; farmers’ market, supermarket and restaurant promotions; and media, including television advertisements.

The staff of 5 a Day–Power Play! will assist North State community coalitions in creating environments in which children are taught to make healthful food choices and be physically active, and are provided with the opportunity to practice these behaviors.

The California Children’s 5 a Day-Power Play! Campaign is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture Food Stamp Program through the California Nutrition Network and the California Department of Food and Agriculture’s Buy California Initiative.
