Summer Bridge Benefits New Students
Two hundred and twenty students from throughout the state-many of them the first in their families to attend college-will spend five days on the California State University, Chico campus next week as part of the University’s long-standing EOP Summer Bridge program.
Students admitted through the University’s Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) attend Summer Bridge, so named because it offers a bridge from high school to college. Activities include registering for classes, learning about housing, financial aid and other university resources, participating in team-building exercises and getting acquainted with CSU, Chico faculty and staff.
The first Summer Bridge session, held next week, is from Tuesday, July 12, to Saturday, July 16. Men will be housed in Lassen Residence Hall and women in Shasta Hall.
After attending the initial session, Summer Bridge participants return the week before school starts on August 14th for workshops to improve math, English and study skills and prepare for the start of the academic year.
Twenty-four faculty and staff mentors as well as additional EOP staff will work with the students next week. “The goal is for the students to feel comfortable about making the transition to college. We want our students to realize that they belong here and will be given the support necessary for them to be successful,” said Christopher Malone, associate director, EOP.
EOP is designed to improve the access and retention of low-income and educationally disadvantaged students at CSU, Chico. It is a state-funded program open to residents of the state of California.
