Former Orion Editor Receives Hearst Journalism Award for Writing

Sarah Schaale, graduate in journalism and former managing editor of The Orion, has won second place in the national editorial writing competition of the 2004 Hearst Journalism Awards Program.

Eighty-six of the best students from 51 journalism programs competed in the annual awards program, which is presented under the auspices of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Schaale won $1,500 and the Department of Journalism, California State University, Chico, will receive a matching grant to be used for scholarships.

Schaale’s winning piece was titled “Losing Grandma is a little lesson in life, too.” In it she writes about sitting with her dying grandmother and appreciating all that her grandmother had given to her.

In addition to being managing editor at The Orion, Schaale also served as features editor, news editor and opinion editor.

Schaale completed her bachelor’s in journalism and will finish a second major in sociology this spring. After taking some time off, she plans to go to law school.

“Sarah’s second-place award in the Hearst opinion-writing contest is quite impressive because the competition is so stiff for those awards,” said Dave Waddell, advisor to The Orion. “Only students from nationally accredited journalism programs are eligible to enter, and the best students from the best universities do so. Sarah’s winning column about her grandmother was quite moving, and I’m sure it touched the judges on an emotional level.”
