Construction Management Faculty Make Presentation
at International Conference

Three Department of Construction Management faculty, professors Denny Gier, Mike Borzage and Chris Souder, represented California State University, Chico at the Annual Associated Schools of Construction 41st International Conference.

More than 135 construction management faculty from across the United States and Europe attended the conference at the University of Cincinnati the first weekend in April.

The Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) is an association of universities across the country that have construction management programs as part of their curriculum. Member universities share ASC’s mission to promote and strengthen construction education.

Gier and Borzage made a presentation of their paper titled, “Can You Effectively Bring Productivity Analysis into the Construction Management Classroom?” In this article the authors present an active method by which common in-the-field, construction productivity improvement methods can be brought directly into the classroom environment.

The method is particularly effective with CM students who are often action and results oriented. The exercise used in the method engages students in “productivity group” activities, e.g., pre-planning, doing activity sampling, performing field ratings, observing, analyzing, reflecting and discussing results. Students learn first hand about how to improve their productivity.

Gier and Borzage’s presentation also included a video montage of the productivity improvement activity assembled by their students. This paper is being published in the conference proceedings.

Gier said, “It is a privilege to represent CSU, Chico’s Construction Management Department and the College of Engineering, Computer Science, Construction Management at a major conference like the ASC’s 41st International Conference. We were excited to share with our colleagues the innovative approach to construction education found here at CSU, Chico.”
