Got Dirt? Hundreds Ready to Help Out in Big City Cleanup

Approximately 750 students, faculty, staff and other volunteers are expected to pick up 15 tons of trash around California State University, Chico and throughout the city during the seventh annual Scour and Devour Campus and Community Cleanup on Saturday, Oct. 2, starting at 9 a.m.

Every year some new areas in Chico are “scoured” by the volunteer crews; for 2004, Columbus Avenue, near Nord and West Sacramento avenues, is an area of focus. Also, roughly 100 volunteers will go to Bidwell Park to help in a creek cleanup.

“The Scour and Devour event that is lead by students within our community is part of what makes Chico a special place to live,” said Tom Lando, Chico city manager. “Through efforts like Scour and Devour we are able to maintain the appearance of our community and enhance its quality of life.”

Starting at 8:30 a.m., volunteers assemble on the Kendall Hall lawn, where they will be directed by job captains to cleanup areas. Lunch for the volunteers, served at noon, is held in the Free Speech Area across from the Bell Memorial Union.

Associated Students officers, fraternity and sorority members and Community Action Volunteers in Education (CAVE) volunteers are among those taking part in the cleanup. City of Chico officials help the effort in many ways, including pointing out areas in need of attention.

Volunteers can sign up any time up to the start of the cleanup. Pre-registration is available this year via the Internet. Those interested can call Jenae Hice, Scour and Devour coordinator, at 895-3343, or go to www.scouranddevour.org.

CSU, Chico’s Office of Facilities Management and Services, Associated Students Recycling, the City of Chico and The Edge Campus Christian Fellowship are some of the major contributors to Scour and Devour.

The list of event sponsors also includes Action Properties; A.S. Activity Fee Council; Albertsons; Alice Zeissler - Century 21 Jeffries Lydon; Butte Community Bank; Butte County Dept. of Public Works; Chico Eye Center; CSU, Chico Residence Hall Association; Culp & Tanner; Hignell Inc.; J.C.
