College of Agriculture Golf Tournament Raises Scholarship Funds
The agriculture community helped raise more than $75,000 at the 9th Annual CSU, Chico, Superior Ag Wittmeier Ford Golf Classic, which took place Monday, July 19, at Butte Creek Country Club. Proceeds from this event are used for scholarships and other student-related programs, and after expenses are paid, generally net between $35,000-$40,000 each year.
“With the help of numerous volunteers and generous sponsors we have completed another successful golf tournament,” said Charles Crabb, dean of the College of Agriculture. “As state university fees increase, the scholarships funds generated by this event become even more important to our students. The continued community support of the College of Agriculture is heart- warming.”
Wittmeier Ford and Ford Motor Company’s Business Preferred Network donated $7,500 this year toward the tournament. Other sponsors included Tri Counties Bank, Bell Carter Olives, Durham Pump, Farm Credit, Matson & Isom, C.F. Koehnen & Sons and Interwest Insurance.
Production agriculturists, irrigation specialists, bankers, food processors, co-op managers and commodity organization managers sponsored and played in the tournament, which is the college’s major fund-raiser. The USB Paine Webber team, consisting of Matt Arness, Bob Bailes, Ken Petersen, Brian Hicks, Kevin Hughes and Mike Wysong took first place with a combined score of 48.
After the tournament, participants were treated to a tri-tip dinner in the clubhouse, an evening program with CSU, Chico president and tournament participant Paul Zingg as guest speaker and a drawing with 23 prizes. America Garman of Bell Carter won the grand prize, a round-trip plane ride and a round of golf for four in Sunriver, Ore.
