College of Humanities and Fine Arts Plans Tour to England

Professors James Bankhead and Royce Tevis, Department of Music at California State University, Chico are the faculty in residence for a band tour to London and York from Jan. 7 through Jan. 17, 2005.

In addition to band members, family and friends of students, alums, staff, faculty, and members of the community are invited to join the tour. The band will be performing at the Royal Academy in London, with the Royal Marines in Portsmouth and with the University of York Band in York.

The tour will last for 11 days, including travel, and will include six days in London and three days in York. A professional tour director will accompany the group throughout the tour. Highlights of a comprehensive sightseeing tour of London will include views of Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, Westminster Abbey, Hyde Park and the changing of the guard at St. James Palace.

Friends and community members will have free time, in addition to planned activities, to explore London while the band rehearses and performs at its various venues. Possible activities include visits to Covent Garden marketplace and the British Museum and optional tours to Oxford and Stratford-upon-Avon.

In York, the group will see the ancient Roman walls of the city, the Castle of York and the Shambles, once the meat-butcher center of the city and now a “gentrified” center of restaurants and shops.

In addition to the performance experience for band members, and the educational and cultural opportunity for community and friends, a tax-deductible portion of the fee supports student participation in the tour and Department of Music activities.

Thomasin Saxe, tour coordinator, has organized the trip with Go Ahead Vacations, an educational tour company. The cost of the trip is $2,000, with $117 going to the Department of Music. Included in the cost is round-trip airfare, airport fees, transfers, first-class hotels, buffet breakfast daily, a dinner and full-time services of a Go Ahead Vacations tour director.

Space is limited, and the tour will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. The $117 for the Music Department is due now. For more information, contact Thomasin Saxe, director of special projects, College of Humanities and Fine Arts, at 530-898-4642 or e-mail her at tsaxe@csuchico.edu.
