First Thirteen Students of Nursing Program Collaboration
Set to Graduate in May
Thirteen Family Nurse Practitioners (FNP) from California State University, Chico will graduate from a new collaborative nursing program this May.
The graduates took advantage of a special collaboration among the nursing programs of CSU, Chico, CSU, Stanislaus and Sonoma State University, which awards the Master of Science degree. They are the first CSU, Chico students to graduate from the program.
The program is available to CSU, Chico students via teleconferencing with Sonoma State. CSU, Chico nursing faculty provide clinical instruction for local students, supervise clinical experiences in health care agencies and offer local seminars and advising for students.
The 13 students graduating from the Chico site completed the program in two or three years. All of the graduates currently live in and intend to practice in Northern California. Many already have offers for positions in clinics, urgent care centers, emergency rooms and private practices.
For the last three years, the project has been funded in part by a federal grant designed to increase the number of qualified primary-care providers for rural and medically underserved populations. Continued funding will be provided by a new grant through the Song-Brown Act, administered by the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development.
Seven continuing students and a group of six new students will be supported in the coming year. The program is accepting applications for the fall 2004 semester at CSU, Chico. Interested RN’s with a bachelor’s degree in nursing should contact Irene Morgan, Chico site coordinator, at (530) 898-6207 or Wendy Smith, Sonoma State’s FNP director, at (707) 664-2276.
