Scholar to Speak on “Just War Theory”

On Thursday, April 29, Professor George Lopez of the University of Notre Dame will visit California State University, Chico to deliver a presentation on “Just War Theory after 9-11.” Professor Lopez’s lecture will be held at PAC 134 at 7 p.m. A reception in Trinity 100 will follow at 8:15 p.m.

Professor Lopez is a senior fellow and director of policy studies at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame. Lopez’s research interests focus primarily on the problems of state violence and coercion, especially economic sanctions and gross violations of human rights.

He is the author of several books, including “The Sanctions Decade: Assessing UN Strategies in the 1990s” (named a Choice Outstanding Academic Title designation in 2000), and has published articles in such prestigious journals as Human Rights Quarterly, The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, International Studies Quarterly, Journal of International Affairs, and Ethics and International Affairs.

Lopez has served in an advisory capacity to a number of foundations and organizations involved in human rights, international affairs education and peace research. From May 1 to December 31, 1997, he served as interim executive director of The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, and currently chairs their board of directors.

This event is part of the Hesburgh Alumni Lecture Series and sponsored by the University of Notre Dame and co-sponsored by the Political Science Department, CSU, Chico, the Provost’s office, Pi Sigma Alpha and Associated Students.

The lecture is free and open to the public.
