Public Relations Student Wins International Award

A senior public relations student has won a major international public relations award from the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC).

IABC announced that Erica Gandy, a senior public relations major at California State University, Chico, and her team at Tehama Group Communications, an on-campus student-managed public relations agency, received the first IABC Gold Quill Sharon Berzok Award.

This award is presented to a student who achieves the highest standard of public relations excellence and who demonstrates a strong commitment to the communication industry.

Gandy spearheaded the writing and production of this year’s Link magazine, the flagship alumni publication for CSU, Chico’s College of Business. Previously, the publication was produced by professionals.

“I’m pleased that my team’s hard work was recognized by such a professional group as IABC. It’s a great honor,” Gandy said.

This is the first year IABC has included a student category in the association’s prestigious international Gold Quill Awards. The awards program is an annual international competition that offers professional and student communicators an opportunity to have their work evaluated by expert judges.

Winners will be honored at a luncheon June 7, and winning entries will be on display at IABC’s 2004 international conference in Los Angeles June 6-9 at the Westin Century Plaza.

Founded in 1990, Tehama Group Communications is the nation’s oldest student-managed public relations agency. The agency gives students an opportunity to gain practical, hands-on public relations experience in an educational setting.

Tehama Group Communications has acquired local, regional and national clients, including two Chicken Soup for the Soul books, the American Lung Association and Clark County of Nevada.

CSU, Chico’s IABC student chapter is one of the largest in California. There are more than 40 IABC student chapters at colleges and universities in Canada, the United States and Hong Kong.

IABC is a network of professionals committed to improving organizational effectiveness through strategic communication. With more than 100 professional chapters, IABC serves 13,500 members in 60 countries representing 10,000 organizations.
