Special Education Program Receives National Award
The Northeastern California Partnership for Special Education at California State University, Chico has been awarded with the 2004 American Council on Rural Special Education (ACRES) award for “Exemplary Preservice and Inservice Teacher Preparation.”
The award is one of eight given to exemplary special education programs throughout the nation. In order to be eligible for an award, each program must be nominated and supported by members of the community familiar with the program.
The award recognizes the Northeastern California Partnership for Special Education on its achievements in teacher preparation for special education in rural areas.
The Northeastern California Partnership for Special Education, based at CSU, Chico, provides special education specialist education to rural schools. It works with special education teachers to improve their knowledge of the changing needs of rural counties by providing Web-based courses and regional supervision. In its 15th year, the program now serves 14 rural counties and 57 school districts.
“This is definitely an award that has been accomplished by a most gifted and talented team,” said Lisa Churchill, professor of professional studies in education and project director for the Northeastern California Partnership for Special Education. “We are so fortunate.”
Churchill accepted the award on behalf of the program, CSU, Chico, the College of Communication and Education and the Department of Professional Studies in Education last week at the ACRES Annual National Conference in Orlando, Fla.
