Educational Talent Search to Sponsor Pizza Fundraiser

The California State University, Chico Educational Talent Search Program will conduct a fundraiser and bake sale at all three Chico Round Table Pizza locations on Thursday, March 25, 5-9 p.m. Each year one student is selected to attend a one-week National Student Leadership Congress in Washington D.C., sponsored by the Council for Opportunity in Education. Round Table Pizza will donate 20 percent of all sales to customers who present a Pizza Fun Night coupon. Coupons can be obtained on site from Talent Search volunteers.

Students representing each state, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the Pacific Islands attend this annual event, which places emphasis on leadership development through community service. Students enjoy a six-day residential experience at American University that is designed to introduce students to elements of effective leadership. They attend workshops on decision-making and problem solving, national service, leadership styles and the political process. Highlights include sessions with policy-makers and educational leaders, meetings with Members of Congress, a Mock Congressional Hearing and visits to historical and cultural sites in and around the capital.

The CSU, Chico Educational Talent Search Program (ETS) is a multi-year grant program funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The purpose of the program is to prepare and motivate students for success in postsecondary education. ETS serves more than 900 students in grades 6-12 and works in 23 schools in Butte, Colusa, Glenn, Sutter, Tehama and Yuba counties.

ETS at CSU, Chico started in 1990 and has helped thousands of students achieve their goal of a college education. Students spend as much as six years in the program preparing for their futures. They are led through a curriculum that helps them define their academic goals; research careers, majors and colleges; improve their academic and testing skills; work with today’s technology; and discover how to finance a college education.

Each year nearly 100 percent of ETS seniors graduate from high school, and approximately 95 percent enroll in some form of postsecondary education. These figures compare with a 67 percent graduation rate statewide and a 57 percent college sending rate.
