Outdoor Orienteering and Wilderness Survival Skills Class
The Bidwell Environmental Institute Field Studies Program at California State University, Chico presents the first in a series of outdoor education classes on Saturday, Feb. 21. The community is invited to participate.
The class will be held at the Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $30, non-refundable, and payment must be received by Feb. 20. Participants will meet at the Green Gate access to Upper Bidwell Park at 9:00 a.m. (This is the parking area on Highway 32 across from Ten-Mile House Trail.)
Class members will learn basic outdoor survival skills, including how to navigate in an outdoor environment. They will learn about compasses, maps, bearings, reading terrain and leaving no trace. This class is suitable for any outdoor enthusiast over the age of 12. It is designed for families, individuals, backpackers and hikers.
Outdoor experience is not required for the class, and even those with considerable experience may benefit from instructor Dave Mahan’s teaching. Mahan was in the U.S. Marine Corps for four years and taught survival skills for his platoon as a corporal in the engineering corps. He worked in the outdoor recreational leadership program at Central Oregon Community College, Bend, Oregon.
Mahan has been a trip leader for Adventure Outings at CSU, Chico for the past two years and has taught outdoor orienteering to the staff. He has a B.S. in recreation administration and is now working on a graduate degree in physical education, with an emphasis in outdoor education at CSU, Chico.
