Spring 2004 Roth Planetarium Programs Begin in February
The Department of Geosciences and the Center for Mathematics and Science Education, California State University, Chico, will begin presentations at the Roth Planetarium on February 15. The presentations are for elementary, junior high and high school students, grades 3 and above.
The planetarium, directed by Professor Jim Regas, has been offering programs to introduce students to astronomy for 28 years. Students learn about basic concepts such as gravity, the orbits of planets, and the difference between a planet and a star.
Information on the planetarium Web site at http://rigel.csuchico.edu/ roth/roth.html has guidance for teachers to prepare students for the visit and information about registering.
Since the number of presentations is limited, preference will be given to classes that are studying astronomy or have just completed a unit of astronomy study. The minimum number of students needed for each presentation is 12. Teachers of classes with less than 12 students can arrange a trip with a second class.
The planetarium will accommodate between 24 and 30 students, 30 if some students sit on the floor. The presentations last between 30 and 50 minutes, depending on the age of the group.
A map showing the on-campus location of the Planetarium can be found on the CSU, Chico Web site: http://www.csuchico.edu/community/ map/westcentral.html.
