Graying of the North State Summit:
Meeting the Needs of a Growing Senior Population
On Nov. 4, the Center for Economic Development at California State University, Chico will host the Graying of the North State Project and Summit at the Red Lion Hotel, 1830 Hilltop Drive, Redding, Calif., from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Graying of the North State Summit will showcase the findings of a two-year project funded by The California Endowment.
As the percentage of older people in the North State increases faster than in the Bay Area, the Los Angeles Basin, and the entire state of California, it is becoming more difficult for providers to deliver essential goods and services to senior citizens. To address these challenges, the Center for Economic Development is completing a two-year needs assessment to investigate a broad range of issues and impacts resulting from the aging trend in Butte, Colusa, Glenn, Lassen, Modoc, Plumas, Shasta, Siskiyou, Sutter, Tehama, Trinity and Yuba counties. The project, titled The Graying of the North State, began in November 2002 and will conclude with the summit on Nov. 4.
The summit will be the showcase event for distribution and discussion of the project’s findings. The event will feature well-known speakers, interesting panelists, and local and regional exhibitors. The summit is designed to help government officials, service providers, care-givers and senior citizens develop strategies to meet regional and local challenges and to take advantage of emerging opportunities.
“Through comprehensive data analysis and numerous community meetings with hundreds of senior citizens and eldercare service providers, we have identified both difficult challenges and important opportunities in the area of aging in Northern California,” said Larry Lloyd, coordinator of the Graying of the North State project.
The Graying of the North State project is funded by The California Endowment and housed within the Center for Economic Development, CSU, Chico Research Foundation. The Center for Economic Development is a private, nonprofit organization specializing in community outreach and technical assistance for Northern California. The CED’s mission is to educate and build the knowledge and capacity of California economic development professionals.
