Veteran State Senator Vasconcellos To Give Campus Talk

Senator John Vasconcellos, D-San Jose, an innovative legislator ending his final term in office, will give a public talk on the California State University, Chico campus Wednesday, Sept. 8, at 6:30 p.m. in Kendall Hall 207.

The talk is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the Upsilon Delta chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, the national Political Science honor society. Prior to his address, Vasconcellos will be meeting with students and faculty at 5 p.m. in the same location.

Now 72 years of age, Vasconcellos has spent 38 years in public office. He first entered public service working in the administration of former California Gov. Pat Brown. During his tenure in the state Legislature, he was the longest running chair of the Assembly Ways and Means Committee.

Vasconcellos is well-known for his fervent interest in human rights, self-actualization, social justice and compassionate governing. His controversial 1987 legislation investigating the value and impact of self-esteem spurred a national debate; the final report of the state’s task force on the topic sold more than 60,000 copies.
