Disabled Students to Play and Compete in Adapted Sports Day

Local students with disabilities will participate in the Adapted Physical Education Sports Day and Fall Festival on Friday, Nov. 7, from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in Acker and Shurmer Gyms at California State University, Chico.

Nearly 80 students from Butte, Sutter, Yuba, Glenn, Tehama and Shasta counties with visual, hearing or orthopedic disabilities will compete in the sporting events.

Opening ceremonies begin at 9:45 a.m. and a closing ceremony concludes the games from 12:30-1 p.m. in Acker Gym.

Students will participate in both individual and team sports from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in Shurmer Gym. Team sports include goal ball, wheelchair soccer, team handball, volleyball, golf and Nerf football. The climbing wall will also be open.

Adapted PE Sports Day has attracted more than 200 people each year since it was created three years ago. Some of the disabled students may become future Paralympic athletes, said Rebecca Lytle, professor of physical education and exercise science.
