Physics Students to Kick Off Halloween With a Blast
The Society of Physics Students will launch Halloween revelry with the 16th Annual Pumpkin Drop on Friday, Oct. 31, at 12 p.m. on the south side of Butte Hall at California State University, Chico.
This popular CSU, Chico event typically attracts crowds of students, faculty, staff and passersby. Spectators delight in the sights and sounds of pumpkins being dropped from the one of the tallest buildings on campus and splattering on the cement below.
The pumpkins will be dropped in rhythm with the cannon blasts of Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture.” “Galileo” will attend the event with his special guest, “Aristotle.”
“We promise you a smashing good time,” said David Kagan, CSU, Chico physics professor.
The annual pumpkin drop is a reenactment of Galileo’s demonstration of his Law of Falling Bodies. According to legend, Galileo dropped a small ball and a large ball simultaneously from the Tower of Pisa and both balls hit the ground at the same time.
