Nationally Honored Sculptor to Visit Art Department

Gary Erickson, a renowned Minneapolis sculptor, will visit campus to share his ceramic sculpture with students, faculty and the community on Friday, Oct. 17, and Monday, Oct. 20, at California State University, Chico.

Erickson will demonstrate his working techniques on Friday, Oct. 17, from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and 1:30-4:30 p.m. in Taylor 103. He will also present a slide lecture of his work on Monday, Oct. 20, at 5:30 p.m. in Ayres 106.

Erickson’s sculpture aims to capture the vitality of living organisms, evoking shells and exterior armor that contain vulnerable life forces. He uses colors and forms that mimic sea life and tropical vegetation.

The nationally honored ceramic artist has received fellowship grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the McKnight Foundation in Minnesota and the Minnesota State Arts Board. His work has been featured in the Smithsonian Institution, the Weismand Art Museum, the Shepparton Art Gallery in Australia and many other collections.

Erickson’s visit is sponsored by the Committee for Arts and Lectures, the Ceramic Arts Student Association and the Center for Excellence in Teaching. For more information, contact art professor Cameron Crawford at (530) 898-6860.
